My name is Gunni and I'm a graphic designer.
I was born in Reykjavik in 1979, the same year
Margaret Thatcher and Saddam Hussein came
to power. I grew up in Reykjavík but I spent
summers with my grandmother on Galtarey
(Hog Island), her small island in Breiðafjörður,
where I took care of my sheep Harðfóta. She
drowned while licking salt of sea weed (the
sheep, not my grandmother).
Like many teenagers, I was not overly enthused
with school. As a result, I dropped out. Later, I
returned when my fascination with magazines
helped me realize that I wanted to become a graphic
designer. I learned the basics at the Reykjavík
Technical College, but in 2002 I was accepted into
the Iceland Academy of the Arts. My second year
I spent six-months as an exchange student at the
London College of Printing (sadly, they changed
the name to London College of Communication
that same year).
After graduation I free-lanced for a while. After
co-designing the Grapevine Airwaves special
issues in 2006 for the Reykjavík Grapevine,
I was offered to take over as the magazine’s full
time Art Director. I gladly accepted. I stayed
there for three years, until August 2008. |
